1 Night @ Dannok, Thailand

February 2014.

My first over the sea trip. Last year, i started with Singapore but this year, let's go to our northern neighbour, Thailand.

This time, we went to Dannok. Basically, Dannok is a small town just across the border of Bukit Kayu Hitam. It is situated at Sadao town, at Songkhla Province of Thailand. We only spent 1 night here, just to get a feeling of the local cuisine and life at night, most of the time.

FYI, muslim community is the major population in Dannok and basically this place is safe even before and after the bombing accident. most probably, someone being so radical and bombed that area for some reason. but in general, Dannok is a pleasant place. It is not super clean city but it's quite pleasant. And people speaks malay language but more towards Kelantanesse dialect.

Picture above and below was not taken in Dannok. This was at some cafe along the road at Alor Star

The city

The only plaza i discovered here. It looks new.

One of the famous meal in Dannok, sticky rice with fried chicken. Sold at various stalls along Dannok street. Never had and never try. Look extremely alluring but since it was left opened, i have to let it go.

The clock tower.

If you notice below the clock tower, there is a few vans waiting near the Seven Eleven. That vans are in tourism business. They take passengers to place like Hatyai, Koh Samui etc. The price, as mentioned by my sister including the insurance coverage. Can't remember how much but it is not expensive.

One of many Muslim restaurants here.

My sister's favourite shop. She bought her groceries here. So, do i. hahaha. it's seriously cheap ok. much much cheaper than Malaysia. so, i bought my toiletries here.

For dinner,  we bought (take away) the "daging salai" or smoked beef for dinner.

Nice huh!! seriously yummilicious. 1 plate cost about RM6. so we bought RM15, it's equivalent to 3 plates.

And for dessert, my favourite sticky rice with mango.
Thai Mango is slightly sweeter than our local one and the seller let us taste it first while waiting for our order.

Seats for dine in customer

For dinner, we headed to Nurlaila restaurant. my sister said, this is the famous one in Dannok and we should never missed it.

tara!!! our dinner consists of tom yam, fried vege, fried chicken (slice) and complementary of salads and super spicy belacan paste.

Verdict: Thumbs up!! both hand and leg. Especially the tom yam. too hot babe..too hot...

Heading back to hotel and notice that one of the night club has started the operation.

Hotel restaurant. Served halal breakfast

We went for a massage. Only me. sister didn't want.

I asked for 1 hour shoulder massage, which really killed me. And 1 hour foot reflex

This is the massage room. Very exclusive right. The price is quite pricey compared to massage shop outside the hotel but still much cheaper than Malaysia. I paid RM54 for 1 and 45 minutes service.

This is the foot reflex area.

Did i mention earlier, i asked for 2 hours massage? yes. 2 hours for RM59. but since they massage me for less than 2 hours and i need to spent time arguing with them, they agreed to reimbursed me RM5. hehe. next time, i wont go to this spa again

The sticky rice and mango

Before we left for Sintok, we dropped by at this shop. They sell most of the beauty products that are available in KL but here with a cheaper price.

The town is basically a very very small town. It's started immediately after the immigration office. Talking about the immigration of Thailand. There is a tip here. it is not a good one. but, my sister told me, that here, they demand a gift. it's not much but of cause it's not ethical.

Things i bought from my visit.

Mini shampoo and batgh form starts at RM2. medium sixe rm4. the most expensive thing i bought is the cathy choo bath foam which is at RM25. Dowry is sold at RM5 only. cheap right. shampoo can be bout at less than RM10 (jumbo size)

Mask. To reduce chubbiness. haha.. i am not sure whether it really work or not. i have only tried it once. It heats and bby right should make my face a bit slimmer. Price, RM25 for 3 pieces.

In short, we had a quality and great time in Dannok even for only 1 night trip. We did almost everything that we had planned. From foods, to shopping spree. Only missed the night market visit. It's not happening that weekend.

  2. Informative article and interesting, what always amazes me is how quick Thai people react at an opportunity as it was here after the last bombs in Hat Yai many nightlife stuff was immediately shifted to Danok. One more thing keep in mind the border is closed from 11 pm to 5 am so no way to get south deep in the night. Also to clear one thing > dont make the Thai uniformed shine in a a dark light, I pass through this border for more than 20 years and NEVER anyone asked me for a "gift". I don't believe what your sister told you or maybe it was a misunderstanding since non of the Thai border people speaks English and does your sister speak Thai?
